What is the best WHEY ISOLATE? Biotech USA versus Optimum Nutrition

Posted on
With 100’s of whey proteins on the market it can be a challenge to know which one to buy. What makes it harder is when companies say ‘ we are the Number 1 whey in the world ‘. Let me give you some truth to that, if a company says they are number one in the world, they are not. Companies don’t determine who is number one, customers do, therefore if there are 10 companies saying they are number one, they are all lying. The reason one brand does not stand out is because a company shouldn’t have to say they are number one. Quality speaks for itself in the health and fitness industry, a bit like when a PT is in shape.

There are good brands and poor brands but due to the market being so big, it can be hard to narrow it down sometimes, especially if you are a buying customer. But there are a few brands that always pop up on a regular basis in the supplement market. These brands are the ones fighting a global battle for brand clout and in essence the whey isolate market, these brands are Biotech USA and Optimum Nutrition.

Both Biotech and Optimum Nutrition have an array of products and have a huge market share in the UK and Europe (ON is huge in USA obviously), but their most famous products are their whey isolate proteins that literally made them global brands. The two whey isolates in questions today are Biotech Iso Whey Zero and the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey. We all want the best whey isolate protein which is cost effective yet high quality and so far these two brands seem to be doing the most in the market. Now let's run their figures and see how they compare between each other.

Whey you buy protein that is ALL you want to be paying for, you don’t need to pay for fillers, extra riff raff and random ingredients. Some companies will throw in so much ‘ extra ‘ to show ‘ added value ‘, but don’t be fooled, they won’t last long in the market. People are smarter nowadays but companies are evidently not. If you want carbs or fats, go buy sweet potatoes, avocados, nuts etc. ONLY buy a protein for the protein content. Period.

In most whey isolate proteins the carbohydrates and fats are low, usually below 2 grams per serving (can be higher), any higher and I think the makers got excited. From the stats above the Biotech Iso Whey Zero is lower in all areas, almost by half. Biotech Iso Whey Zero has only been prominent around the UK for the past 3 to 4 years, whilst ON Gold Standard Whey has been around for more than a decade. Despite the years, ON’s numbers are higher when they could and should be lower. One of the many reasons they don’t change the numbers is because they are established and they don’t need to do it. In a nutshell they don’t care as people will buy them anyways. They only increased their protein content in the last few years! When you buy clothing you can let things slide, but when you are buying something to get the ‘ gains ‘ don’t let things slide, get your moneys worth.

Some brands can be forgiven for the carbs and fats (nobody forgives or forgets if they got no gains though), but NOBODY will forgive a brand for deceiving them about protein! Now let us look at the protein content of these two brands.

Based on the information above people will immediately look at the Gold Standard Whey being 24g of protein per serving. We ALL look at this number first and rightly so but take a step back from both tubs and look at the bigger picture, the 24g isn’t actually the higher amount.

The ON Gold Whey is 24g of protein per 30.4g serving while the Biotech Iso Whey Zero is 21g per 25g serving. Looking at the numbers the Biotech Iso Whey Zero is actually MORE because it has less of a serving size yet has more protein. If you were to have both products as a 25g serving ON Gold Whey would be less, meaning Biotech Iso whey would have LESS fats, LESS carbs but MORE protein per serving and per scoop.

You only have to look at the PROTEIN PER 100 GRAMS to see Biotech has 6 grams more for every 100 grams of protein. Some people may say well its only 6 grams but if you take protein regularly then you lose a lot of grams. Let me put it into context for you:

6 grams x 150 = 900 grams

900 grams = a small tub of protein

900 grams divided by 25 grams = 36 servings of protein

SO if you don’t mind losing a tubs worth of protein over a certain duration then carry on losing 6 grams every time you buy a tub!

If we look at making the serving size the same for BOTH isolates, then it makes more sense:

Serving Size 25g

Serving size 30.4g

Biotech IWZ

25g

25.5

ON Gold Whey

19.73

24g

If you made BOTH companies do the same serving size Biotech Iso Whey would win in both serving categories. Companies can lie, marketing can lie but numbers NEVER lie.
SUMMARY

In essence there are many products on the market that play with numbers and many people just don’t read the label. We are all engrossed in buying a particular brand or that the flavour is better and so forth. But always look at the numbers and if there is a major difference please do go for the product that has the best quality, highest protein serving per 100g and most importantly the best ratio of serving size to protein content.

ALWAYS make sure it is only WHEY PROTEIN ISOLATE, if you see any words of concentrate, egg protein, whey blend or proprietary blend …. AVOID THAT TUB!

Finally to put it all into context we have created a list of protein isolate products/brands with comparisons of protein per serving, serving size and the price of a 2kg or 2.2kg tub. MOST of these tubs are isolates but the reason for the list is that these are the most prominent brands/products in the UK right now.
